The El Monte City Council appointed Councilmember Jerry Velasco as Mayor Pro Tem on Tuesday, January 8. Mr. Velasco has served as Councilmember since 2015.
Mayor Pro Tem Velasco has been in the entertainment industry for over 40 years as an accomplished actor, producer and advocate. His acting credits include co-starring roles in such TV shows as, “Club Med,” “Hunter,” “Fantasy Island,” “Seguin” and “Chico and the Man.” He also ventured into Mexico to film Mexican soap operas such as “El Maleficio,” among others, becoming one of the first American actors to cross over.
Mayor Pro Tem Velasco began his political career as a Planning Commissioner for the City of El Monte. In 2013, he was then elected as the El Monte City Treasurer. In 2015, Mayor Pro Tem Velasco was elected to the El Monte City Council; he previously served as Mayor Pro Tem in 2016.
Mayor Pro Tem Velasco has enriched the City of El Monte with projects such as Cinco de Mayo Celebration, the Nutcracker, Mural Art Project, International Musical Productions and more. In addition, he has supported projects to move the City forward, including business development and affordable housing.
