[ARCHIVED] Buckle Up! Passengers on Public Transit Are Now Required to Use Seat Belts

El Monte Bus

El Monte, Calif. –As part of a new law effective July 1, passengers on public transit, like the El Monte buses and shuttles, are required to use seat belts or will be subject to a fine.

The new law applies to commuters over the age of 16 riding buses that are already equipped with seat belts. For commuters under the age of 16, guardians will be responsible for securing them in a seat belt; children may not use the public transit if seat belts are not available.

Passengers who violate the law may be subject to a $20 fine for the first offense and $50 for the next.

The law also requires public transit agencies to maintain seat belts in a good working condition and to notify passengers of the new law. Passengers using the City of El Monte’s buses will see notices on all transit vehicles.

Governor Jerry Brown signed the legislation into law on October 8, 2017.

For questions regarding the new law, please contact the City of El Monte Transportation Services Division at (626) 580 – 2217.
