El Monte, Calif. – The City of El Monte continues to make progress on Safe Routes to School, a construction project at Wilkerson, Cherrylee, Gidley and Parkview elementary schools that aims at increasing pedestrian and traffic safety. With the ongoing construction, parents are advised to follow traffic control signage.
The City has nearly completed work on the Gidley and Parkview elementary schools. Construction on Cherrylee and Wilkerson schools is over 75% complete.
Improvements include addition of sidewalks; reconstruction of curb and cutter; construction of ADA access ramps; installation of storm drains; and striping.
The City anticipates that construction activities near Cherrylee and Wilkerson elementary schools will continue for the next couple of weeks. For this reason, parents must:
• Adhere to traffic control signs.
• Use designated pick-up and drop off zones.
• Follow temporary pedestrian path with temporary crosswalks and crossing guards.
• Arrive early as motorists and pedestrians are likely to experience delays due to construction activities.
The safety of construction crews, motorists, and pedestrians remains a top priority. The City asks that you share information with others and watch for construction crews and equipment near the Wilkerson and Cherrylee schools.
