El Monte, CA – Hundreds of residents chanting “Love Shouldn't Hurt” marched around City Hall calling attention to domestic violence during the 3rd Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence on Thursday, October 25.
The event started with a resource fair, which helped connect victims of domestic violence to over 20 local resources, such as the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, Kaiser Permanente and Bikers Against Child Abuse.
El Monte Councilmember Victoria Martinez shared the importance of supporting women, men and children who experience domestic violence. “By focusing on knowing your resource, anyone can support a person in a domestic abuse crisis,” said Councilmember Martinez.
Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, Chair for the Select Committee on Domestic Violence, also addressed the crowd, discussing a recent bill signed into law that increases protection for survivors of domestic violence from gun violence.
Following, guest speaker Lynette Dominguez provided hope for survivors by sharing her family’s heartfelt tragic domestic violence story.
As dusk approached, the participants embarked on the one-mile walk along Peck Road and Valley Boulevard, chanting “No Mas, No More.” The walk ended with the lighting of the Statue of Liberty in purple.
To continue supporting victims of domestic violence, the City of El Monte will be hosting a “Break the Cycle” summit on October 12, 2019.
